2000 Guineas Day

World Pool Moment Of The Day

2,000 Guineas Day, Newmarket

Newmarket was basked in glorious sunshine for the first World Pool meeting of 2022 in the UK and the action on the track was electric. The 2,000 Guineas was the highlight feature of the day, and the quality undercard inspired punters all over the world to get involved in the action, leading to a record World Pool turnover for the meeting of HK$257.7million.

The opening World Pool meeting of the season in the UK also dangled one extra prize for connections, the World Pool Moment of the Day, which rewards stable staff of the winner with £1,000 and a bottle of champagne.

There was drama and brilliance throughout, but Sophie Able, General Manager at Newmarket Racecourse, could only select one as the World Pool Moment of the Day. The honour ultimately fell with team Charlie Appleby, Godolphin, and James Doyle. Coroebus was delivered late to mark a first Classic success for jockey Doyle and a first Guineas for trainer Appleby, who remarkably saddled the first two home.

Upon receiving the Moment of the Day award and learning that Coroebus’ groom Qadeer will receive £1,000, Charlie Appleby said: “Qadeer, who looks after Coroebus, has done such a fantastic job with him so it’s well-deserved, and it’s very kind of you to choose him and sponsor it in the way you have. “It’s been a great day for ourselves, and most importantly it’s been a great day for Godolphin.”

The first World Pool event of the year in the UK was a roaring success with the total turnover increasing from HK$185.3m in 2021 to HK$257.7m which can only lead to more excitement as we approach the next World Pool instalment on these shores which will be from Epsom for the Oaks and Derby on Friday 3rd June and Saturday 4th June respectively. We can’t wait to do it all again.

Tallulah Lewis, Head of International Partnerships, UK Tote, speaks with Charlie Appleby, trainer of COROEBUS on being selected as the Moment of the Day winner on 2000 Guineas Day.
