Gold Cup Day

Day Three at Royal Ascot was another cracker, with some top-quality horses showing their class as we passed the halfway point of the Royal Meeting.

Shareholder got Wathnan Racing off to a great start winning the Norfolk Stakes in style, getting the better of a well-backed Aidan O’Brien runner in Whistlejacket.

O’Brien and Ryan Moore responded with a double, winning the Ribblesdale Stakes with Port Fairy, before Kyprios completed his miracle comeback to bring a ninth Ascot Gold Cup back to Ballydoyle.

They were, however, unable to complete the hat-trick with Air Commander in the Britannia Stakes, which saw Callum Rodriguez take the race aboard MICKLEY.

Hong Kong owner Siu Pak-kwan watched on as his horse hit the front a furlong out and never looked back, winning the race and in doing so landing the World Pool Moment of the Day.

Mickley’s groom, Barry Lusted, was delighted to pick up the £4,000 prize and showed immense pride in the three-year-old’s third consecutive victory: “I’m very proud and very happy for him. I knew he could do it, he just needed the chance. I’m delighted with him.

“I was very hopeful without being confident, it’s really tough to come to Ascot and think you’re going to win. We thought we had the right horse to do it and thankfully he’s done it – good boy Mickley!”

Mickley’s victory gave trainer Ed Bethell his first win at Royal Ascot, and Lusted described the occasion as his best day in racing.

Lusted said: “This is definitely my best day in horse racing. I’ve waited nearly 20 years for a Royal Ascot winner, what a day!”

Lusted will now have a chance of winning a VIP trip to Hong Kong should Mickley’s success be chosen as the World Pool Moment of the Year.

“I’ve waited nearly 20 years for a Royal Ascot winner!” said Barry Lusted, Mickley’s groom.
