Goodwood Cup Day

Day One of Glorious Goodwood saw some serious performances, including a course record broken in the day’s feature.

Trainer Johnny Murtagh picked up the opening Chesterfield Cup with Take Heart.

Two Group Two contests followed, with impressive Godolphin two-year-old, Aomori City, calming waltzing across the line under William Buick in the G2 World Pool Vintage Stakes for Charlie Appleby, reclaiming his crown in the race from 2019.

Following that, it was Audience for John and Thady Gosden who turned heads in the G2 World Pool Lennox Stakes under Robert Havlin, winning by an impressive four lengths.

Despite the nature of that victory, it was star stayer KYPRIOS who won the World Pool Moment of the Day, taking back his title in the G1 Goodwood Cup in style for Aidan O’Brien and lowering the course record in the process.

Ryan Moore barely touched him 400m out when his rivals were all off the bridle, but when he pressed the button, Kyprios was away and gone.

Reaching the 200m mark, Kyprios pulled well clear of his contenders and managed to cross the line comfortably fourth lengths clear, underlining his position at the top of the staying division.

David McMahon, who helps transport the superstars at Ballydoyle, was there to accept the £4,000 Moment of the Day cheque on behalf of Kyprios’ groom, Wieslaw Kwasniak.

He said: “It was great to see Kyprios bounce back after everything that’s happened to him. It’s fantastic for Wessie [Wieslaw] given all the work him and the team put into the horse.

“They [stable staff] all look after him and have got him back to where he was.”

Kwasniak will now enter the World Pool Moment of the Year competition for the chance to win a VIP trip to Hong Kong next year.

Having played his part in bringing Kyprios over from Ireland, McMahon said: “They’re long old days but they’re rewarding for days like yesterday, it’s pinch yourself stuff.”
