Irish Derby Day

World Pool’s first Irish Derby Day from the Curragh certainly lived up to expectations with major achievements and records set by racing yards big and small.

HARRY’S HILL provided trainer Martin Hassett with a win on the biggest stage, and it was a true family success with the trainer’s daughter Megan Hassett leading up the five-year-old, and his nephew Wayne Hassett in the saddle.

In what was the closest finish on the eight-race card, Wayne had to be patient and wait until deep inside the final 200m before unleashing his mount with a telling run to burst through and get up on the line.

It was a thrilling finish, with the first five horses all separated by less than half-a-length at the line, and one that was chosen as the World Pool Moment of the Day.

After receiving the €4,000 prize, Megan Hassett, groom of Harry’s Hill, said: “I didn’t think it could get much better, earlier I was on cloud nine, but this is even better!”

“I’m just doing my job, coming here and doing what I love, so this is just unreal.”

She added: “We’ve been very lucky and had loads of winners in the last few months, but this is right up there. Wayne is flying now and to get a winner on a day like today is all you want.”

Hassett will now enter the World Pool Moment of the Year competition for the chance to win a VIP trip to Hong Kong next year.

There were other notable moments on the day, with AUGUSTE RODIN landing the English-Irish Derby double and in the process securing a remarkable 100th European Classic success for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

It was jockey Ryan Moore’s first win in the Irish Classic and means the Coolmore-retained rider has now won every Classic in Britain and Ireland.

Away from the Curragh, World Pool was also in operation for the first time from Hamburg Racecourse for the Deutsches Derby.

FANTASTIC MOON followed in the footsteps of his sire, 2014 German Derby winner Sea The Moon, by staying on best to land the spoils in the hands of Arc de l’Arc de Triomphe-winning rider Rene Piechulek for his partner, trainer Sarah Steinberg.

Megan Hassett, groom of Harry’s Hill, winner of the Rockingham Handicap won the World Pool Moment of the Day – Irish Derby Day.
