Met Day

The 2023 World Pool season kicked off in style with one of South Africa’s biggest racedays, The Met Day at Kenilworth.

The World Pool was in action for nine of the 12 races on the card and plenty of money was bet into the comingled pools with a record HK$279.3m wagered.

There was some great action on the track, including a nail-biting finish to the Gold Rush, which saw ROYAL AUSSIE emerge victorious. It was the four-year-old’s third victory of his career and was met with a tremendous celebration from jockey Richard Fourie.

The big race on a day where turnover was up 8.3% in 2022 was The Met, and this year’s highlight went to JET DARK. The Justin Snaith-trained runner went one better than 12 months ago having turned the tables on last year’s victor KOMMETDIEDING.

Once again in 2023, the World Pool Moment of the Day will reward an extraordinary equine or human performance on each of the World Pool days.

The first one this year certainly wasn’t an easy decision with some impressive performances, but, after much deliberation, the judging panel decided to award it to GIMME A PRINCE (groom - Morris Mgube). The winning performance came in the fiercely competitive Grade 1 Flying Championship and set the tone for what promises to be a terrific 2023 World Pool campaign.
