Nassau Stakes Day

Day three of Goodwood saw surprises aplenty, particularly in the G1 Nassau Stakes where French-trained favourite Blue Rose Cen was out of luck in a tactical race.

There was nearly more hard luck for NOVUS in the three-year-old handicap over a mile, as the gaps only opened just in time for Gary Moore’s filly to quicken up and win under Tom Queally.

It was a quick turnaround for Novus, who had finished second only two days earlier on the opening day of the festival, and it was a success that was chosen as the World Pool Moment of the Day.

Hayley Moore, daughter of trainer Gary, picked up the £4,000 prize on behalf of Novus’s groom Maddison Wright and explained the story behind the success.

“Maddison has been with us a few years and is a very important part of our team, and played a key part in preparing Novus.

“When she won at Goodwood earlier in the season, she did get a little bit unwell, so we backed off her to help her get over it. While she was quite fresh she actually had a bit of an incident, which was very out of character. She landed on top of Maddison, which made her unconscious, so my brother Jamie had to phone for an air ambulance.

“Thankfully Maddison was okay, she walked away with some bruises and broken ribs and came to visit Novus as soon as she got out of hospital. She didn’t blame the horse, it was just one of those things that comes with the dangers of riding racehorses, which proves how important stable staff are.”
