Nassau Stakes Day

Day Three at Glorious Goodwood featured plenty of thrilling action and some close finishes.

There was a treble on the day for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore, who exhibited world-class jockeyship to coax Jan Brueghel home in the G3 Gordon Stakes and was again imperious aboard Opera Singer in the feature race of the day.

Moore had to be at his strongest to repel the late challengers in the G1 Nassau Stakes, as the Ballydoyle filly recorded a second G1 win in gusty fashion, and Moore brought up 150 wins at Goodwood.

In contrast, upcoming Irish jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle was having his first ever ride at the Sussex track and his resulting victory aboard BLACK FORZA in the G2 Richmond Stakes was chosen as the World Pool Moment of the Day.

McMonagle looked more like a Goodwood veteran when conjuring up a fantastic finish from Black Forza, as the Michael O’Callaghan-trained two-year-old flew home from off the pace to run down the pace-setting leaders.

Afterwards O’Callaghan was on hand to collect the £4,000 Moment of the Day prize on behalf of Black Forza’s groom Lauryn Faulkner, and he touched on her role in the preparation of the colt:

“She’s the only one that rides him and she takes unbelievable care of him. He’s not the easiest to ride in the mornings and to be honest, Lauryn is the only one that gets on really well with him and switches him off.”

“He came from the breeze ups and he took a while to settle into our routine, but Lauryn has got on with him from day one. She loves him very much and she was absolutely over the moon today.”

“She’s so dedicated that she’s actually gone home with the horse already, but I know she’s delighted to win this prize!”

O’Callaghan also showed his appreciation of the award: “A special thank you to World Pool for sponsoring these moments because it’s very important to all the staff that look after the horses.”

Black Forza’s win will now enter the World Pool Moment of the Year competition, meaning Faulkner could win a VIP trip to Hong Kong next year.
