Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes Day

As the final day of Royal Ascot rolled around, many racing fans were wondering if Day 5 could maintain the level of quality we’d seen up to then, and the action on the track certainly didn’t disappoint.

Bedtime Story was all the rage in the opening Chesham Stakes, but people could’ve scarcely believed what came next.

Aidan O’Brien’s Frankel filly destroyed the field, winning by almost 10 lengths, in doing so giving Ryan Moore his sixth win of the week.

Later on the card, Khaadem completed a historic double in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes for Charlie Hills, becoming the first horse since 1959 to go back-to-back in the race.

The victory moved Oisin Murphy into second spot in the World Pool Jockeys’ Championship on 72.25 points, although still a long way behind Billy Loughnane on 149.55!

But it was in the second race, the G2 Hardwicke Stakes, in which we saw the World Pool Moment of the Day.

ISLE OF JURA, who arrived at Ascot off the back of a Bahraini ‘Triple Crown’ in the winter, was an emotional first Royal Ascot winner for both trainer George Scott and jockey Callum Shepherd.

Shepherd, who has endured a tough couple of months after he lost the ride on Derby second Ambiente Friendly, was visibly moved by his first winner at the meeting and so Scott’s charge was a worthy winner of the prize.

David Kenny, who looks after the horse and collected a £4,000 (HK$40,000) winners’ cheque, revealed further what it meant to the team to land such an important Royal Ascot winner after an up and down time for the yard and jockey.

“It’s fantastic to come here and, to have a runner, let alone a winner, is just amazing.”

“It’s his first time travelling and he never turned a hair, he’s just a dream to deal with.”

David said: “As George said, it’s been a massive team effort to get this horse here, and I’m so happy for him and Callum. I’ve been with George for seven years, I’ve been through all the highs and lows, and this is such a massive high. All credit must go to the horse, George and the brilliant team at home.”

(“I’ve been through all the highs and lows, and this is such a massive high!” said David Kenny, ISLE OF JURA’s groom.
