Saudi Cup Day

Saudi Cup Day dazzled under the lights at King Abdulaziz Racecourse and produced many dramatic moments, including in the world’s most valuable race, the G1 Saudi Cup.

A ferocious pace saw over half of the 14-runner field vying for the early lead, which eventually collapsed, as Ushba Tesoro swept by long-time leader Saudi Crown inside the final 50m, only for Senor Buscador to challenge latest of all and get up on the line.

The World Pool Moment of the Day went elsewhere though, after a brilliant success for the Sir Alex Ferguson-owned and bred SPIRIT DANCER, who stayed on strongly to land the G2 Neom Turf Cup in great style.

Hayley Irvine, groom of Spirit Dancer, will receive a cheque for HK$40,000 as well as entry into the World Pool Moment of the Year and the chance to win a trip to Hong Kong next year.

After hearing the news, trainer Richard Fahey said: “They picked the right one because Hayley is due to get married soon, so this will be a big help for her. It’s fantastic [Hayley receiving the prize] – nearly as good as Spirit Dancer winning.

“Hayley has been with me for 16 years, and since she started in racing she’s never worked for anyone else. She’s looked after Spirit Dancer since he came here, so she’s been heavily involved with him and the yard. We’d be lost without her.”

World Pool Moment of the Day will return on Dubai World Cup Day on March 30.

Spirit Dancer wins the G2 Neom Turf Cup in the red of co-owner Sir Alex Ferguson.
