Sussex Stakes Day

The rain poured on the second day of Goodwood but it failed to dampen the spirits after some exceptional performances, including from this season’s star three-year-old, Paddington, in winning the G1 Sussex Stakes.

While Aidan O’Brien’s colt won the affections of a whole host of new fans, he was beaten to the World Pool Moment of the Day prize by a sprinter that is exceeding all expectations this season.

Michael Appleby’s BIG EVS backed up his Windsor Castle win at Royal Ascot, defying fears about the soft ground, by once again showing dazzling speed in making all the running to win the G3 Molecomb Stakes under Jason Hart.

It was another win on the big stage for the small, but very capable Appleby yard, and on hand to collect the prize was Big Evs’s groom Madan Singh.

“He’s a very good horse, very nice to look after. He’s a proper Group 1 horse,” Singh said.

When asked what he would do with the £4,000 prize, Singh replied, “Put it in the bank!”

Singh now also has the chance to win a trip to Hong Kong, if Big Evs’s Molecomb success is chosen as the World Pool Moment of the Year.
