Sussex Stakes Day

After a brilliant opening day of Glorious Goodwood, World Pool returned for Sussex Stakes Day.

The G1 Sussex Stakes went the way of Godolphin, with Notable Speech putting his below-par Royal Ascot run behind him.

William Buick utilised the Goodwood cutaway to perfect effect to slip up the rail and secure a decisive win in the week's feature race.

However, there could only be one World Pool Moment of the Day winner.

The Michael Appleby-trained BIG MOJO surpassed expectations to win the G3 Molecomb Stakes in good style under a well-executed Silvestre de Sousa ride.

In what was a fast-paced competitive dash, Appleby looked to have the best chance two-furlongs out when stable companions, Big Mojo and Mr Lightside seemed to be travelling comfortably.

This proved to be the case and it was the RP Racing Ltd-owned Big Mojo who found an extra gear, echoing Big Evs' performance in the same race last year.

It was a case of déjà vu as the red and blue quartered colours crossed the line in front.

The groom of Big Mojo, Mark Bjelland, was on hand to collect the £4,000 Moment of the Day cheque and he said: “This is up there for one of the best days racing that I’ve had, and all credit goes to the horse. Big Mojo has put in that performance and I’m just lucky enough it has been chosen as Moment of the Day, and £4,000 – you can’t complain with that!

“I’ve been working at Mick’s for 11 years now, I’m part of the furniture there – this is a real team effort.”

When asked about how it is to go racing with Big Mojo, Bjelland said: “He was good for most of the preliminaries, but he did just get a bit excited towards the end of it. But on the whole, he’s a good horse to be with on a race day, he is very relaxed for a colt.”

Bjelland will now enter the World Pool Moment of the Year competition for the chance to win a VIP trip to Hong Kong next year.
