Turnbull Stakes Day

Turnbull Stakes Day saw plenty of Australian - and international - stars press their cases for the rest of the spring down under.

Among them was FUTURE HISTORY, whose victory in the Group 3 Bart Cummings earned him an automatic berth in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington next month.

Rated perfectly on the speed by Craig Williams, the Ciaron Maher and David Eustace-trained Future History was able to fend off a late surge from the favourite First Immortal to score by three-quarters of a length.

While Future History's stablemate Gold Trip - last year's Melbourne Cup winner - produced arguably the performance of the day in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, it was Future History's rags to riches rise from restricted company in June to a guaranteed spot in Australia's most famous race three months later that saw his win named Moment of the Day.

Future History's groom - or strapper, as they are known in Australia - Rugbi Murray was awarded $8,000 and he will now have the chance to win a trip to Hong Kong next year should Future History's win be chosen as World Pool Moment of the Year.

"He's my favourite horse," an emotional Murray said. "I've always looked after him since day one. I started with Ciaron and David in February and he's always been there. It was very good to get the big win today and it's very exciting to think he is in the Melbourne Cup.

"I'm not sure what I will do with this prize, I think I'll just put it in savings. Thank you to the Hong Kong Jockey Club and World Pool, it's a great day of racing and to know it was seen all over the world is pretty amazing."

The next Moment of the Day will be awarded at the Everest meeting at Randwick next Saturday, October 14.

Rubgi Murray – the strapper of Future History, wins the Moment of the Day of Turnbull Stakes Day.
