Victoria Derby Day is traditionally one of Australia's biggest race meetings as thousands pack into Flemington and tune in from afar for a nine-race card filled with stakes contests.
Perhaps the most impressive winner was Switzerland, who won a hot G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) against a vintage crop of three-year-olds to stamp himself as the nation's best emerging sprinter. With Storm Boy, owned by the same Coolmore connections, now leaving Australia to join Aidan O'Brien in Europe, it is expected that Switzerland will step up and become the next top speedster down under.
The day's feature, the G1 Victoria Derby (2500m), went to top jockey Jamie Kah as she produced a tremendous ride from a wide draw to take the prize on the Andrew Gluyas-trained Goldrush Guru. Remarkably, she won with a suspected broken nose suffered in an earlier barrier incident.
However, it was an earlier win, sustained before her injury, that was awarded World Pool Moment of the Day.
That came aboard ANOTHER WIL in the G2 The Damien Oliver (1400m), a victory that saw the usually unflappable Ciaron Maher break down in tears and Kah left speechless.
The source of their emotion was the passing of managing owner Colin McKenna a week before. McKenna was a large supporter of many Australian stables but particularly Maher, with whom he raced numerous horses including Caulfield Cup winner Jameka.
As a result, Another Wil's victory was named World Pool Moment of the Day with strapper James Barker receiving a cheque from AUD$8,000.
"It was incredibly emotional for all of us," Barker said. "He's a terrific horse, he's a lot of work but he's only getting better and we do think he'll get that Group 1 win.
"We only wish that Col was here. Obviously, his relationship with Ciaron goes back years and he has been a great supporter of us all. I'm sure he was watching today."
Barker is now in the running to win a trip to Hong Kong next year should Another Wil's victory be voted as the World Pool Moment of the Year later this month.
ANOTHER WIL’s strapper (groom), James Barker, was presented the Moment of the Day AUD$8,000 cheque.
