Tuesday 9th July 2024 – Sunday’s Deutsches Derby Day from Hamburg saw World Pool set a new turnover record for the G1 Deutsches Derby, while total turnover on the day also hit a new high with the German track hosting four World Pool races for the first time.

The German Classic saw the Henke Grewe-trained Palladium ridden to success by Thore Hammer Hansen as turnover increased 37 percent from 2023, totalling HK$35.9 million (€4.2 million).

Across the four races on the card, turnover from World Pool bet types reached HK$102.2 million (€12.1 million).

Deutsches Derby Day followed closely on the heels of two other World Pool events the previous day, with Durban July Day from Greyville in South Africa and the Eclipse Stakes from Sandown in the UK.

It was the first time Durban July Day had been a World Pool event and across the two featured races – G1 Durban July and G1 Garden Province Stakes – turnover hit HK$64.1 million (ZAR148.3 million).

The Durban July itself was won by Oriental Charm, trained by Brett Crawford and ridden by Juan-Paul van der Merwe.

At Sandown, the G1 Eclipse Stakes was the sole World Pool race on the card and was making its return as a World Pool event for the first time since 2021.

Epsom Derby winner City Of Troy was the main attraction, and while the Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old managed to win, he did so only in workmanlike fashion.

The star colt will need to be better when he tackles his next assignment, which is likely to be the International Stakes at York next month, where World Pool will once again be in operation.

Turnover from World Pool bet types over the seven races from Sandown, Greyville and Hamburg reached a total of HK$181.9 million.
