Doncaster Mile Day

On a card labelled a championship meeting, there are always going to be great stories aplenty, but one stood out above the rest, earning the title of World Pool Moment of the Day.

The G1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) is always one of Australia's greatest betting races and so it proved again as CELESTIAL LEGEND charged home to land the feature.

Hong Kong owner Bon Ho Ka-kui combined with octogenarian trainer Les Bridge, one of the legends of the Australian turf, to take out the world's most prestigious mile handicap. It came almost four decades after 86-year-old Bridge won the race for the first time with Row Of Waves.

Completing the triumvirate was 25-year-old rider Tyler Schiller, who got his weight down to a feather-light 49kg (7st 10lb) in order to take the prized mount.

In honour of this tremendous story, Celestial Legend's victory was judged to be the World Pool Moment of The Day with groom Campbell Ashby accepting a cheque for AUD$8,000.

"It's been a big day," said Ashby. "This horse is very special to everyone at the yard. We're only a small yard, 18 horses, and so to get rewards like this, it's absolutely brilliant.

"I've been lucky enough to travel plenty and to ride some very good horses, but I reckon this bloke is the best I've had the chance to ride since Golden Horn. Celestial Legend had always shown a lot since his early days but he was immature and just needed time to come to hand.

While Ashby was presented with the cheque, he was quick to ensure that everyone that works at Bridge's High Street stables – the same yard from which the trainer has operated for over 60 years – would be receiving a portion of the prize.

"It will be divided up between the boys," he said. "We'll get tonight out of the way first, a drink or two, and then look forward to the future. I'd love to see him in Melbourne for a Cox Plate – there's no way I'd be missing that. But it really is a team effort."

Ashby is now in the running to win a trip to Hong Kong next year should Celestial Legend's victory be voted as the World Pool Moment of the Year in November.

Campbell Ashby, strapper of CELESTIAL LEGEND, took the AUD$8,000 cheque back to the yard after the Doncaster Mile winner was named World Pool Moment of the Day.
