Dubai World Cup Day

This year’s Dubai World Cup Day at Meydan Racecourse certainly didn’t disappoint as it produced some spectacular performances with winners from the UAE, Hong Kong, Japan, UK, Ireland, France and the United States.

In fitting style, the feature race saw probably the best performance of the night as LAUREL RIVER flew away from his rivals under a masterful ride from Tadhg O’Shea to win the Dubai World Cup by eight-and-a-half lengths.

His achievement was all the more amazing as he broke from the widest draw in stall 12 and swept to the lead in the early stages, but when he shot clear off the home turn it was clear his rivals were chasing in vain.
It was a remarkable display of galloping and was chosen as the World Pool Moment of the Day.

After the race, trainer Bhupat Seemar spoke about groom Bhopal Singh and the daily care and attention he gives Laurel River: “He’s been with us six or seven years. He’s a very quiet man and he does a great job with him.

“This horse, he’s a beautiful boy. Once upon a time they thought about gelding him actually, but thank God they didn’t!”

Singh will receive a cheque for HK$40,000 and the chance to win a trip to Hong Kong next year should Laurel River’s victory be chosen as the World Pool Moment of the Year.

On receiving the prize on Singh’s behalf, Seemar said: “We’re very thankful – these guys work so hard. This will mean a lot to him and his family.”On receiving the prize on Singh’s behalf, Seemar said: “We’re very thankful – these guys work so hard. This will mean a lot to him and his family.”
